Resident Evil 2 Remake: Big PS4 News could revive fan favourite Capcom characters

Capcom's Resident Evil 2 Remake is definitely in the works, and although we don't have a release date for the title, we know it'll release at some point in this console generation.

Very little is known about the game at this stage, other than Capcom is definitely working on it.

The game was handed some bad news earlier in the year, however: it turns out that Claire Redfield’s voice actress, Alyson Court, will not be reprising her role for the Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Following the announcement, Leon Kennedy's voice actor Matt Mercer tweeted that he wouldn't be reprising his role either. For fans of the game that wanted an authentic remaster, this was heartbreaking news: how could the remake live up to player's memories if it was using replacement actors?

The actors originally stated they wouldn't be returning to the project because of The SAG-AFTRA union strike, which began on October 21st last year.

The SAG-AFTRA strike took place to ensure voice actors in gaming got better contracts, worker's rights and representation - and now the strike is over, with actors settling on good terms with publishers and development studios.

This is fantastic news for the Resident Evil 2 Remake, in theory.

Both Mercer and Court were members of unions standing in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Now that the strike is over, it's likely we could see the actors hired by Capcom - assuming voicework for the title is not yet underway.

According to statements from Court, there have been two companies competing to work on the voice and mocap for the project as long as two years ago.

However, when one company got the contract they informed Court that her services wouldn't be required.

It seems that decision was made due to Court's affiliation with the union - but now the strike is over, we're hoping to see the original actors return for the Remake.

It's also worth noting that Court has played Redfield six times throughout the series, but was replaced for Resident Evil: Revelations 2 likely due to actors striking.

So it certainly would make sense for Court to return given her deep affiliation with the character.

This comes after Capcom announced some surprising Resident Evil news.

Ahead of the launch of Resident Evil 2 Remake, the company has re-released Revelations and Revelations 2 on the Nintendo Switch.

But these aren't just regular old ports.

The version of the games released on Switch contains some bonus new content that any true Resident Evil fan is going to want to pick up and play.

This week, Capcom released two new trailers for the Switch versions of the games that contain two brand new, retro-themed games.

Ghost Ship Panic is the minigame based on the first Revelations title, where players are tasked with shooting enemies as they appear on-screen.

The second minigame, titled Ghouls n Homunculi as a throwback to Capcom classic Ghosts n Ghouls, will have Resi veteran Barry Burton exploring a haunted island and defeating enemies.

These mini-games will both be optional but will grant players BP for playing: this can be used to unlock items in both game's Raid modes.

You can see more about these mini-games here.

As for Resident Evil 2 Remake, we still know very little about the project.

Capcom officially announced it last year, but hasn't revealed much since.

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi did break his silence on the game back in July, telling Collider that the remake would be out soon.

“The only thing I can tell you is about something that’s already out in the public,” he explained.

"Resident Evil 2, a remade version, the game, will be out from Capcom soon.”

Unfortunately, however, it won't feature the original cast, because both Leon Kennedy voice actor Matthew Mercer and Claire Redfield voice actor Alyson Court have dropped out.

Resident Evil Revelations and Resident Evil Revelations 2 are due to be released for the Nintendo Switch on November 28.

Both are already available on PS4 and Xbox One, minus the bonus mini-games.
