‘Maternal, child mortality must end in Nigeria’

Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, has called for an emergency against maternal and child mortality.

He said meaningful and impactful interventions must be made so Nigeria will no longer experience maternal deaths.

The CMD spoke as chairman of the fourth annual lecture of Abimbola Aina Omololu-Mulele Endowment in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, organised by Office of Advancement, University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Fabamwo, a professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, noted that the theme: ‘Fostering Research and Innovation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Women’s Health’, was contemporary as it centres around women’s health.

“Women’s health should be seen as a critical contributor to the national economy but, unfortunately, indicators and data show more needs to be done regarding that in Nigeria,” he said.

Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Reproductive Health in University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State, Prof. Friday Okonofua, who was guest speaker, said research and innovations would promote excellence, and achieve further progress in promoting women’s health and social well-being.
