A man who hacked a 81-year-old pensioner to death before setting her body on fire has been ordered to remain in Broadmoor Hospital indefinitely.

Tautrydas Narbutas, 25, used an arsenal of weapons, including a machete, wooden stakes and knives to kill Albertina Choules, who lived alone, after climbing into an upstairs window of her home in High Wycombe, in the early hours of July 6, 2016.

Before she died, the brave woman, who was a Buddhist widow, managed to make a 999 call for help as she fought with him in her £2 million home, before succumbing to her injuries.

The Lithuanian-born schizophrenic had taken Mrs Choules naked body into her garden using a wheelbarrow, stabbing her with three wooden stakes, before cutting off her ring finger using the machete.

He then set her body on fire, before stripping naked and attacking a police officer as they arrested him, reports the Bucks Free Press.

As police approached him he put his hands in the fire, and became even more violent.

The police officer who he attacked thought he was going to die, and another has had to have assistance to cope with the stress.

He denied murdering Mrs Choules, but the prosecution accepted a guilty plea to manslaughter through diminished responsibility.

Passing sentence, Mr Justice Stuart-Smith said: ‘What you did was deeply shocking and utterly revolting to anyone in their right mind.

‘You broke into her home by an upstairs window and then attacked her with sustained ferocity inflicting the most terrible injuries and humiliating degradation upon her.

‘You took her out of her house and into her garden where you started a fire, onto which you put her naked body. At some point you severed one of her fingers and a ring was found nearby.’

Italian-born Mrs Choules would look after the wildlife near her home, and allowed visitors to visit her estate as part of a Buddhist trail she built with her husband Micheal, who died of cancer in 2004.
