Violence mars April 10 by-elections, MCP supporters hacked

Violence erupted on Tuesday in Milonde ward where ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters attacked Malawi Congress Party (MCP) who came to vote in the by-elections conducted by the Malawi Electoral Commission.

It is alleged that the DPP youth cadets hacked Prudence Ngoma who was later taken to Mulanje District Hospital for treatment.

The supporters of both parties also engaged in a fight at a police unit in the area where they went to report the incident.

MCP Deputy Secretary Eisenhower Mkaka confirmed of the development in an interview with faceofmalawi reporter.

Mkaka said the party reported the matter MEC Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah for consideration.

DPP regional governor for the South Charles Mchacha also confirmed of the fracas in separate interview but could not confirm that the thugs were from his party.

Meanwhile an unofficial result indicates that the ruling DPP Councillor has emerged victorious in Milonde ward while in Mangoch United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate has also won.
