Family speaks out about child hurt in playground accident
Three children remain in the hospital after being run over by an out of control pickup truck.
The accident happened Saturday afternoon at William Harrison Park on Oleanda Avenue.
Ja'Hiem Dansby was pinned under the vehicle.
His family said he remains in stable condition after undergoing surgery on Sunday.
"I can just only imagine how scared he was," his mother Tracey Martin-Dansby said.
Five kids were hurt, three of them were all friends and rushed to Norton Children's Hospital in critical condition.
Ja'Hiem's parents said they were on their way out of town when they got the call.
"I just tried to stay calm. My husband was driving and he was speeding, and I didn't want us to get into a car wreck on the way back because we do have other kids that need us," Ja'Hiem said.
Ja'Hiem has a broken femur.
Tracey said what happened at the park is now weighing heavily on the family's funds.
"It's too many hospital bills to even imagine being able to take care of. I'm not sure how we're going to do it," Tracey said.
While grateful Ja'Hiem survived the collision, the Dansby's didn't mince their words for the driver.
"It's reckless on his behalf. I want him prosecuted to the fullest," Ja'Hiem's father Charles Dansby said.
The driver and passenger were also taken to the hospital in critical condition.
There is no word on any charges.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
